Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technical Advisor
(Gaziantep/Turkey and Amman/Jordan)
iMFAD invites applications for an EOD International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) level 3 qualified or equivalent military/police standard Technical Advisor to support its mine action program in Syria, stationed in Gaziantep, Turkey. The Technical Advisor (TA) will spend her/his time in Gaziantep, Aleppo/Syria and Amman/Jordan. S/he will visit Aleppo, Syria regularly while in Gaziantep to perform his relevant duties and tasks in the field.
TA’s main responsibilities are to supervise clearance teams in areas contaminated with explosive remnants of war (ERW). The TA reports to the Program Manager. S/he will work in a potentially unstable environment, therefore will need to demonstrate a positive and self-motivated attitude and ability to get along with others in a close-knit team. Conditions such as these require a level head, patience, a can-do attitude, a person who is solutions- oriented and has a willingness to adhere to strict security protocols. Good interpersonal skills with national authorities and national staff are a prerequisite.
The eligible candidates will participate to the 2-month training/standardization activity in Amman, Feb – Mar 2020. The selected trainees will be paid per diem with accommodation during the training period.
- Supervise and mentor search/clearance teams.
- Conduct NTS, Battle Area and Mine Clearance.
- Conduct Explosives Ordnance Disposal as required.
- Operate in accordance with iMFAD Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and International/National Mine Action Standards (I/NMAS).
- Provide technical oversight of field operations including training, daily operational planning and implementation, and the direction of locally employed operational and administrative personnel under his/her control.
- Provide capacity building to national staff within his/her team, when needed.
Turkish nationality is essential.
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
Graduate degree from a University or graduate of vocational school with 10 years of work experience.
EOD International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) level 3, or equivalent military/police standard qualified.
Knowledge and experience of EOD and ERW clearance methodologies.
Minimum 7 years of work experience in Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA), commercial or military mine/ERW/UXO clearance.
Instructor work experience in the field of EOD is an asset.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements
Knowledge of IMAS, Non-technical Survey (NTS), Battle Area Clearance (BAC).
Flexibility, cultural awareness and sensitivity are essential.
Computer literacy including proficiency in Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.
Experience in high-risk/hardship environments is an asset. Experience working within or with humanitarian NGOs is an asset.
Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
Fluency in written and spoken Arabic is desired.
The EOD Technical Advisor will be stationed in Gaziantep and will work in the fields of Aleppo to support field staff and perform EOD Technical Advisor activities in connection with the Office in Ar Raee, Aleppo. She/He will usually work within basic working hours unless there’s a need for her/him to meet deadlines. Most of the time, the EOD Technical Advisor is only required to work on a weekday, but not on a holiday.
